Exercise doesn't have to mean working out on the machines in the gym or running marathons; it can be as simple as parking the car farther away from the store or doing seated leg lifts during TV commercials. This class is recommended for members with concerns about balance and loss of upper and lower body strength. Focus will be on functional fitness as well as balance and strength. Free for all members.
The exercises build gradually, are safe and can be performed by anyone. Muscles become toned and lengthened, posture is improved, and movement becomes more graceful as the student becomes more aware of his/her body.
An engaging class dedicated to strengthening the body, increasing coordination and balance, and making you feel healthier and fit! Great for active older adults and those new to working out.
Increase muscle strength and range of movement, and improve activities for daily living. You’ll have a chair for seated exercises and standing support. Free to all members
Mild to moderate joint involvement. 20 minutes of cardio, marching in place, basic arm and leg movement patterns. Improves muscle strength, flexibility, endurance, coordination, and balance.
Line Dancing is choreographed to a variety of music with repeating series of steps that are performed in unison. Learn some fancy footwork while challenging your mind to memorize these fun sequences.
Improves: Balance, coordination, cardiovascular, everyday physical function; sleep. Reduces: pain, bone-loss, and depression. All ages are invited.
Zumba is a dance-fitness class that is set to zesty Latin music like salsa, merengue, mambo, etc. Zumba Gold modifies the moves and pacing to suit the needs of the active older participant.
Slow flowing class of gentle stretching and physical postures using breath to connect mind and body. This is an excellent way for improving flexibility, balance and great for de-stressing.
A therapeutic style of yoga which utilizes props to make it easier for the body to get into certain poses. The focus of this class is relaxation, renewal, effortlessness, ease and a completely supportive environment.
This program blends basic yoga poses and toning exercises and will leave you feeling centered and relaxed. It will also bring fitness and mental clarity.
Renee teaches Easy Pace Aerobics and Line Dancing at our activity center. She is also a ballet instructor and tap teacher and currently teaches at Quenedit Ballet School. Join one of her energetic and fun classes on Monday or Thursday mornings!
Christiane teaches Yoga Mixed and Yoga & Toning. She is also certified in YogaFit and SilverSneakers BOOM Move. Improve your flexibility and strength with Christiane on Monday and Thursday afternoons.
Edwina teaches Ballet Barre on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. She started dancing at age 7 and as a military dependent she moved often and was able to study under excellent teachers in 3 states and 2 foreign countries. After teaching all through high school and beyond, she attended Texas Christian University as a Ballet Theater major before marrying and having a family.
After 6 productions as choreographer and performer with community theater in Del Rio, TX, (1982- 1987) and some teaching on the side, she began teaching again full time in San Antonio in 1990 and retired in 2001. At the same time, she continued her education at St. Mary’s University and graduated in 1992. In 1991, she trained for and received her certification with the Royal Academy of Dancing (RAD).
Since retirement, she has continued an exercise regime in either aerobic dancing or resistance circuit training. After feeling that neither of these disciplines entailed an adequate amount of stretching, she designed a class to meet her own needs and to help others maintain or regain their flexibility and range of motion, and has been teaching Ballet Barre at our center since January 2017. She has witnessed many positive results in clients whose ages range from the late 20s to the mid-70s.
Kevin teaches Tai Chi, runs our monthly Gym Training, and occasionally holds self defense classes at our center. He holds two second degree black belts in Shaolin Kung Fu and Tai Chi Chuan, has trained in various martial arts and combat sports for the last 22 years (boxing, MMA, BJJ, Muay Thai) and was a Top Team member at ACWA Combatives in Dallas. Kevin has taught a variety of martial arts discplines since 2000 and recently opened his own school, "Intrepid School of Defense", in Spring Branch. Gain flexibility and relax your mind with Kevin on Friday mornings.
Adiana teaches Zumba Gold & Toning and Cardio & Strength. She holds numberous Zumba certifications, including Zumba Gold, Zumba Toning, Strong by Zumba, Zumba Step and Zumba Core. Dance your worries and calories away with her Zumba class on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, or get energized on Tuesday mornings during her Cardio & Strength class.
Jan is a long-time volunteer who taught Chair Fitness and recently got certified for SilverSneakers Classic. Reduce your fall risk and gain strength and balance in Monday morning's FREE SilverSneakers Classic class.
Linda teaches Yoga Mixed and Restorative Yoga. Relax your body and gain flexibility and strength during one of her classes which are held on Monday and Tuesday afternoons.
Sandra recently joined the Bulverde Spring Branch Activity Center as an instructor. She is a certified Zumba instructor but is working towards SilverSneakers certifications and currently teaches our FREE Balance & Strength class which is held each Wednesdays.
Tonie has been with the activity center for more than 20 years and spent most of these years teaching exercise classes and overseeing the wellness program. She is currently enjoying retirement and travelling the country with her husband, but visits us every chance she gets and occasionally fills in as a substitute instructor.
Our gym features a treadmill, a recumbent bike, a row machine, an elliptical and several weight machines. The weight machines are set up as a circuit, and most of them offer a push/pull feature which allows you to work opposite muscle groups at the same time. Hydraulic fitness equipment works your muscles all the way through the movement and its fluidity reduces impact on your joints while allowing you to stop the movement at any time.
The Fitness Membership includes the access to our gym. We also offer a Gym Membership for the adults who want to stay in shape and gain the benefits from physical activity but who may not enjoy group exercise classes.
The gym area is open during regular business hours (Mon-Thu 9am-4pm and Fri 9am-1pm). We offer gym training and orientation for both newcomers and regulars on the 3rd Wednesday of every month. During this session you will receive advice and assistance from Kevin, our Tai Chi instructor, and given a workout card which allows you to track your workouts in the gym and monitor your progress. Sign up sheets for these sessions are found on the information wall by the entrance hallway.
